What is complex trauma?
Complex trauma, also known as complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD), results from prolonged exposure to traumatic events, especially relational violations and neglect. It is different from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is typically associated with a single, isolated traumatic event.
Complex trauma occurs due to ongoing or repeated trauma, such as childhood abuse, neglect, or domestic violence. It can also result from being treated as an adult during childhood, such as having to take care of your parent's physical or emotional needs.
Symptoms of complex trauma may include:
Difficulty regulating emotions and behaviors
Negative self-perception and distorted thoughts about the self and others
Difficulty with trust and relationships
Disruptions in attachment and bonding with others
Difficulty with self-care and daily functioning
Treatment for complex trauma often involves a combination of therapies, such as Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems based psychotherapy, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR). Often with treatment, related symptoms like feeling down, anxious, confused, and hypervigilant may be resolved. It is vital for individuals experiencing complex trauma to seek out the support of a mental health professional with experience in treating trauma.
