Goodbye Coping, Hello Healing

Walking into ‘New Year, New Me’ is a little difficult if you’re feeling stuck with ‘Old Me, Old Problems’. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); Trauma is a physical, cognitive, and emotional response caused by a traumatic event, series of events, or set of circumstances that is experienced as harmful or life-threatening. Understanding How Trauma Affects You can help you work through what your personal trauma looks like.

Ultimately, this means that everyone defines and copes with trauma differently. What may feel harmful to you, might not apply to everyone else. So, Why Should I Heal Trauma? How can I level up my vision board with resiliency and post-traumatic growth goals?

Here are 3 tips to get you started; and an activity bonus if vision boards really are your thing:

  1. Create Safety.

    • Have you ever been in a room where it is so loud you can’t hear yourself talk? Healing begins in a space where you can take a breather. Grab your favorite comfort items and head to your favorite place where you can be when you’re feeling overwhelmed. This will create an environment where you can feel safe and comfortable enough to explore and process your feelings. Eventually, you’ll be able to develop emotional regulation techniques that you can implement wherever you are.

  1. Focus on your body.

    • Learning to listen to how your body responds to your emotions takes practice, but the more you tune in, the more you can understand how certain events impact you. The point here is to feel how your body responds to trauma and develop the ability to calm your nervous system. We use therapeutic exercise techniques from a practice known as, Somatic Experiencing. One of the core principles is to move slowly through body awareness and it can be used with many trauma-informed therapies.

  1. Maintain Boundaries

    • Once we’re able to notice our body responses and pinpoint what is causing them, we can put boundaries into place. Here, we are able to manage our triggers.
